A few people have asked about the difference between Open and Explorer divisions.
There really is no short answer, so I cut and pasted the answer below:
The Open Season is regarded as the NSSA's premier division in all instances. Invitation to special events are based on Open results. Age categories are set up different in some categories making the format easier for Explorer surfers.
At the championship level, Explorer has the option of being a 6-man format with 3 surfers advancing versus ALL Open divisions which is a 4-man heat format with 2 people advancing out of heats. Note: we are trying to move away from 6-man heats completely in all NSSA competition including the championship levels but because of time constraints that is not always possible. So it would be Explorer that would go into the 6-man format at any competitions that the time and completion of the event is an issue.
THE OPEN DIVISIONS ARE ALWAYS 4-MAN FORMAT AT THE CHAMPIONSHIP LEVEL. The Open Season in the SW events uses computer scoring (which theExplorer divisions do not but that would not necessarily affect the SE regular season.
In the Open Season, a competitor IS REQUIRED to be attending school at any age and in any category. If a competitor graduated high school, he would need to be attending college to compete in the Open. In the Explorer, if proof of high school graduation or GED is presented, the competitor DOES NOT have to attend school. EX: We have several Explorer competitors on the west coast who have a GED and not attending school so they cannot compete in the Open.
The Explorer has the recreational divisions as well including divisions for older competitors.
Heat time requirements are 20 minutes in the Open and 25-minute Open fi nals. At the championship level Open Mens, Juniors and Women's will sometimes run 30-minute finals. The Explorer has the flexibility to have 15-minute heats and 20-minute finals depending on time constraints.
The Open runs WSL Priority rules at the SW Open and all Regional and National Championship events in the Open Mens, Open Juniors an d Open Women's categories. The Explorer has no priority rules in any division.
